✒️Structure: 75 minutes | Interactive Poll | Live Q & A

Overview

As Africa explores new models for financing nature, biodiversity credits are gaining ground as a powerful complement to carbon markets. This webinar explores how these two instruments are beginning to work together—through bundling and stacking—to strengthen the value proposition for nature-based solutions.

With dozens of biodiversity credit pilots underway across the continent, momentum is growing. But to scale, the market must overcome a key hurdle: limited and uncertain demand. Drawing from lessons in carbon markets—where regulatory signals, buyer commitments, and financial tools have driven exponential growth—this session looks at how similar momentum could be generated for biodiversity credits, particularly through integration with carbon markets.

This 75-minute session spotlightS emerging trends, real project examples, and practical steps to help build a high-integrity, investable market that values the full spectrum of African ecosystems—from keystone species to grasslands, wetlands, and forests.

Why It Matters for Africa

While carbon markets have helped channel capital into emissions reductions, they often undervalue the broader biodiversity and community co-benefits of African conservation. Bundling or stacking biodiversity credits with carbon credits offers a way to capture this missing value—monetizing ecosystem integrity, wildlife presence, and broader land stewardship in a currency that buyers already understand.

This evolving practice could unlock new revenue streams for African conservation and restoration projects while enhancing the credibility and impact of both markets.

Can Carbon Markets Help Biodiversity Credits Take Off?
As biodiversity credits emerge across Africa, a promising trend is taking shape: bundling them with carbon credits to boost value, impact, and buyer interest. This webinar explores how carbon and biodiversity markets can work together – what’s holding back demand, and what policies, incentives, and financial tools can turn pilot projects into scalable, investable solutions for nature and communities.

Focus Areas

The discussion explores:

  • The key distinctions and synergies between carbon and biodiversity credits
  • Demand-side barriers: risk, measurability, trust, and comparability
  • How bundling and stacking of carbon and biodiversity credits is already happening in Africa
  • What corporate, sovereign, and philanthropic buyers need to engage
  • Policy and regulatory tools to de-risk early demand (e.g., TNFD, procurement policies)
  • Finance models (e.g., blended finance, guarantees) to support early transactions
  • The role of co-benefits and community equity in enhancing value and trust

Speakers (confirmed to date):

  • Monique Atouguia, Lead, Global Africa Nature Market, NatureFinance
  • Alister Scott, Executive Director, GRA (Global Rewilding Alliance)
  • Toral Shah, Biodiversity Coordinator, Plan Vivo Foundation
  • Pauline Nantongo, Executive Director, Ecotrust (Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda)
