“Segele mine is a testament to Ethiopia’s vast potential in the mining sector and the importance of international partnerships to realise this potential,” declared Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during the inauguration of the Segele mine.
This significant event, held on November 20, 2024 was a collaboration between Akobo Minerals AB, a Scandinavian-based Ethiopian gold exploration and mining company, and the Ethiopian government.
The ceremony was marked by a symbolic gold pour, yielding an impressive 6.5 kilograms, showcasing the mine’s high-grade ore and production capabilities. Prime Minister Abiy, alongside Gambella Region President Ms. Alemitu Umod and Minister of Mines Habtamu Tegegne, toured the state-of-the-art facility, observing its innovative technologies and efficient operations.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasised the transformative potential of the mine for Ethiopia’s economic diversification and the empowerment of local communities. “We are proud to see this project reach a significant milestone, benefiting not only the national economy but also the communities around it,” he said.
Akobo Minerals CEO Jørgen Evjen expressed heartfelt gratitude, applauding the tireless efforts of the Akobo Minerals and Etno Mining teams.
“The inauguration of the Segele mine is a defining moment for Akobo Minerals. This project is the result of years of dedication, collaboration, and innovation,” Evjen said. “We are especially grateful to the Ethiopian government, the Gambella region, and the local community for their unwavering support. Together, we have built something truly extraordinary.”
