Latest developments on Operation Vala Umgodi in Stilfontein

December 26, 2024

Stilfontein, in South Africa’s North West province, has become a focal point in the battle against illegal mining. As part of Operation Vala Umgodi (“Close the Hole”), authorities have sealed numerous mine entrances in the area to curb illegal activities.

The initiative aims to cut off supplies to illegal miners, forcing them to leave the shafts. Over several months, these efforts have resulted in the arrests of numerous illegal miners. The operations have continued unabated, even during the December holiday period.

Zama Zamas emerge

Recent developments have seen several illegal miners, known as zama zamas, voluntarily emerging from the disused mine shafts in Stilfontein. The South African government has noted that this demonstrates the miners’ ability to exit the underground tunnels independently. Officials suggest that the delayed emergence is likely a tactic to evade arrest by law enforcement agencies.

Government addresses misconceptions

To counter misinformation surrounding the Stilfontein operations, the government released a statement clarifying its position.

“The notion that miners remain trapped solely due to police actions is misleading,” the statement read. “SAPS has implemented measures to secure the area and prevent further illegal activities, but designated exit points have been established to allow miners to surface safely and face due legal processes. The miners possess the means to exit independently, as demonstrated by those who have surfaced in recent days. Government’s stance is to uphold the rule of law; thus, while immediate aid is not provided to facilitate illegal activities, measures are in place to ensure the safety and humane treatment of individuals who choose to come above ground.”

A broader effort to address Illegal Mining

The South African government said it remains steadfast in its efforts to combat illegal mining, which poses significant risks to both individuals involved and the broader community. Initiatives such as Operation Vala Umgodi are part of an ongoing campaign to rehabilitate abandoned mines and prevent further unlawful exploitation.

Acknowledging the socio-economic factors driving illegal mining, such as unemployment and limited economic opportunities, the government said they are also working to address these root causes and aims to create safer communities.
