This achievement marks more than 2,943 consecutive days free from any fatal incidents, emphasising Tumela Mine’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding the health and safety of its workforce, contractors, and nearby communities.
The milestone was celebrated across the mine recently, with teams reflecting on the importance of vigilance and the collective responsibility to ensure everyone returns home safely each day. “This achievement is a testament to continuous improvement, hazard awareness, and a safety culture where doing the right thing is non-negotiable,” said Tumela Mine Safety Manager, Alwyn Smit. At Tumela, this commitment is reflected in advanced safety technologies and initiatives. For example, the mine has implemented blast-on-mesh coverage to reduce fall-of-ground incidents by installing wire mesh to prevent loose rock from endangering workers below. This system has been successfully applied in stopping panels, significantly enhancing underground safety.
Additionally, Tumela employs cutting-edge technologies such as the scraper winch proximity detection system, which uses sensors to detect workers approaching hazardous areas, automatically stopping machinery to prevent accidents. These technological advancements complement ongoing safety training and leadership accountability, reinforcing a culture where Zero Harm is the ultimate goal.
Anglo American’s broader Zero Harm strategy involves embedding safety programs, fostering open communication, and encouraging all employees to take personal responsibility for their safety and that of their colleagues. The company continuously explores new solutions to improve safety management systems and reduce risks, demonstrating that world-class safety standards are achievable and sustainable.
With this new record, Tumela Mine sets a benchmark for the mining industry, proving that through dedication, teamwork, and innovation, a safe working environment is not only possible but expected. The mine’s leadership remains committed to advancing the Zero Harm journey, ensuring that safety remains the foundation of all operations.
