Metalkol SA boosts development of mining communities in DRC

In line with the revised Mining Code of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), cobalt producer La Compagnie de Traitement des Rejets de Kingamyambo S.A (Metalkol SA), a Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) company, has signed its second Cahier des Charges to support the sustainable development of local communities in Lualaba Province.

This will benefit nine communities across the villages of Samukonga, Kamimbi, Kipepa, Kashala and Samukinda.

The signing ceremony was attended by Fifi Masuka Saini, Governor of Lualaba Province; Wamana Tanda Nicodème, Provincial Minister of Mines of Lualaba; Nicolas Treand, ERG Africa CEO and representatives of the beneficiary communities.

Masuka Saini expressed her support for the initiative: “This Cahier des Charges is designed to assist Metalkol SA in delivering socio-economic infrastructure and social services to the local communities affected by its operations. I sincerely thank ERG Africa for adhering to the legal requirements and encourage other mining operators to do the same.”

The projects planned under the initiative will focus on the following sectors:

• Agriculture and livestock farming: Enhancing food security and local economic development
• Education: Building school facilities to improve access to education
• Energy: Connecting communities to a hydroelectric grid to expand access to electricity
• Local entrepreneurship: Establishing a bakery and flour mill

Treand highlighted the Group’s commitment to sustainable development: “Our approach is guided by fundamental values: respect, dialogue, and responsibility. As a good corporate citizen, we are committed to partnering with our host communities. In 2024 alone, ERG Africa supported 58 communities in the DRC, contributing a total of 95 million dollars through the 0.3% DOT contribution and mining royalties as part of its community development initiatives.”
