Arable Grow: Revolutionising Food and Water Security in Africa through advanced vertical farming

December 10, 2025

CAPE TOWN, South Africa – November 18, 2025 – In an insightful interview with Elodie Ashdown, Investment Project Lead at VUKA Group, Hein Duvenhage, Co-CEO of Arable Grow, shed light on his company’s transformative approach to addressing critical food and water security challenges in Africa.

Arable Grow is pioneering an Africa-specific vertical farming technology designed not only for profitability but for profound environmental and social impact, marking a significant step towards resilient food systems on the continent.

Duvenhage articulated the company’s foundational purpose, stating, “Arable Grow was founded on the vision to make an impact, to alleviate food and water insecurity.”
This vision stems from a deep understanding of the paradox facing regions like South Africa: abundant arable land, yet persistent food security issues exacerbated by climatic conditions and inefficient logistics.

Confronting Africa’s Dual Crisis: Food and Water Insecurity
The continent grapples with escalating food insecurity, a challenge intensified by climate change and traditional farming methods that are resource-intensive and vulnerable to weather fluctuations. Duvenhage emphasised the stark reality, observing, “In South Africa, despite abundant arable land, we face a significant food security problem, directly linked to what cities and their populations now demand.”

A critical, often overlooked, aspect is water conservation. Conventional agriculture consumes a disproportionate amount of fresh water globally. “A key impact for us is water security,” Duvenhage affirmed, noting that “while 67% of global fresh water is used in agriculture, our system requires 90% less.” This dramatic reduction positions vertical farming as a key solution for regions facing water scarcity.

Arable Grow’s Innovative, Africa-Specific Vertical Farming Model

Arable Grow’s solution is a lean, low-cost, and fully integrated vertical farming system. Unlike many international counterparts that have struggled after significant initial investments, Arable Grow has prioritised building a robust, sustainable model from the ground up. Duvenhage highlighted their strategic focus: “We’ve built a lean company, dedicated to developing technology that is truly Africa-specific.”

The company’s approach centres on a “farming as a service” model, with modular production units ideally located close to urban centres or directly on client sites. This proximity offers several advantages:

Pesticide-Free Produce: Cultivating in controlled environments eliminates the need for harmful pesticides.
Reduced Logistics: “Producing directly on site makes logistics significantly more efficient for clients,” Duvenhage remarked, pointing to reduced transport costs and carbon footprints.
Year-Round Consistency: The ability to produce year-round offers unparalleled reliability, a significant advantage for corporate and retail clients.

Delivering Triple Bottom Line Impact

Arable Grow is not just a commercial venture; it’s a testament to the power of integrating environmental, social, and economic benefits:

Environmental Stewardship:
Water Conservation: By using 90% less water than traditional farming, Arable Grow significantly contributes to water security.
Waste Reduction: The company operates with near-zero waste. Unsold produce is converted into a high-value superfood powder, and the growing medium is composted for school gardens.
Carbon Emission Reduction: Each single farm unit contributes significantly to carbon emission reductions, estimated at 60 to 90 megatons of CO2 equivalent, by reducing transport emissions and avoiding soil degradation.

Social & Nutritional Security:
Healthier Produce: Duvenhage explained the nutritional advantage: “Our proximity to market enables us to guarantee more nutritionally dense products,” ensuring consumers receive products with higher nutritional value, as nutrients like Vitamin C can degrade rapidly after harvest.
Community Education: Arable Grow actively engages with communities, including operating a farm at Beaumont Primary School in South Africa, teaching children about urban farming.
Food Security: By providing consistent, healthy, locally grown produce, the company directly enhances food security for communities and corporations.

Economic Viability & Scalability:
Profitable Business Model: Arable Grow has successfully built a profitable business model that generates revenue through produce sales and is expanding its “farming as a service” offerings.
Modular Scalability: Duvenhage described their modular approach, stating that it “allows for easy replication and expansion, addressing common scalability challenges in vertical farming.”
Customer-Centric Operations: Focusing on scheduled orders for clients, Arable Grow minimises food waste and optimises production, contributing to a lean and efficient operation.

Navigating Challenges and Charting Future Growth

Despite the clear benefits, Arable Grow has navigated initial challenges, particularly around regulatory frameworks and market perception in South Africa. Duvenhage reflected on the regulatory landscape, noting, “It was tough to gain certification as local auditing bodies lacked comparable standards for vertical farming, but we’re actively collaborating with regulators to shape future guidelines.”

Market perception has also evolved. While early engagement was difficult due to scepticism about vertical farming in South Africa, consumer interest is growing in hydroponically grown, GMO-free, and heavy metal-free produce. Duvenhage observed, “The consumer is really starting to search for these types of products.”

Marketing also presented a learning curve. Initially relying on organic discovery due to product quality, Arable Grow is now developing a new go-to-market strategy focusing on consumer messaging. Duvenhage outlined their growth strategy: “We are now focused on scaling up, which includes expanding into retail and growing our delivery network to increase customer engagement.”

Investment Opportunity: Cultivating Africa’s Future

Arable Grow presents a compelling investment opportunity for those looking to support scalable, sustainable, and impactful solutions in the African green economy. With a proven model that delivers environmental, social, and economic returns, the company is poised for significant expansion.

This strategic vision, coupled with their lean operational model and commitment to innovation, positions Arable Grow as a leader in cultivating Africa’s resilient and healthy food future.
