Exxaro appoints Ben Magara as new CEO

Exxaro Resources Limited has appointed Ben Magara as new Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2025. Magara will succeed Acting CEO Riaan Koppeschaar, who will resume his role as Finance Director.

Magara is a seasoned mining executive with over 35 years of experience, recognised for his leadership in operational excellence, strategic growth, and industry transformation. His background includes roles at Anglo American Coal and Lonmin Plc, where he successfully stabilised and restructured the company before its acquisition by Sibanye Stillwater. Magara also founded Africa Mining & Metals Group, which focuses on batteries and precious metals.

In 2020, Ben established Africa Mining & Metals Group (AMMG), a mining and advisory firm specializing in battery and precious metals. He has extensive experience in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mining sector, particularly in advisory roles within the Copperbelt. Currently an independent non-executive director at Weir Plc, a FTSE100 company, he will continue in this role while stepping down from the Board of Grindrod Limited on 1 April 2025.

Exxaro Chairman, Geoffrey Qhena, expressed confidence in Magara’s ability to stabilise the organisation and advance its growth and sustainability strategy. “Ben brings a wealth of mining leadership and governance experience, along with impeccable integrity. His deep experience will be invaluable as we maximise our current assets and transition into diversified minerals and renewable energy solutions,” Qhena stated.

Magara’s appointment received unanimous support from the Board, with Lead Independent Director Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi highlighting his people skills and emphasis on teamwork. Magara has been an independent non-executive director at Exxaro and chairman of its Investment Committee, providing him with extensive knowledge of the company and industry. Magara’s leadership is expected to steer Exxaro through its financial challenges while driving diversification into green energy transition minerals.

“I am honored to take up this role and excited to expand our portfolio towards critical low-carbon minerals, enhancing value for all stakeholders while balancing profitability with environmental and social sustainability,” Magara said.
