Sibanye-Stillwater and UJ launch R43m mining facility

November 25, 2024

The University of Johannesburg and Sibanye-Stillwater have partnered for over a decade, investing over R55 million in research, innovative technologies, and practical training for mining students.

In an investment of R43 million, Sibanye-Stillwater and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have launched the innovative Sibanye-Stillwater Simulacrum mining facility and the Sibanye Stillwater Centre for Sustainable Mining.

This funding enables UJ students, researchers, and academics to immerse themselves in realistic underground mining conditions, fostering innovative research and practical learning in sustainable mining practices.

The Simulacrum mining facility, located in the Doornfontein UJ campus, is a state-of-the-art mining facility that replicates an underground mining environment by using a vertical shaft, mine tunnels, stope environments, a rescue chamber, and advanced virtual reality technology.

Furthermore, the partners said they have also introduced the Centre for Sustainable Mining, which will focus on postgraduate research and practices that incorporate the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies. Sibanye-Stillwater has committed R12.75 million to support the Centre’s activities from 2024 to 2026.

The partnership between the UJ and Sibanye has flourished for over a decade, resulting in an investment exceeding R55 million in research and development, innovative technologies, and practical training for mining students.

Since 2013, Sibanye-Stillwater has allocated more than R2 billion toward educational support. As CEO Neal Froneman underlined, “The future of our industry depends on innovation, skilled professionals, and a commitment to finding safer and more productive ways to mine.”
