Getting to know Bogolo Kenewendo: Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy

H.E. President Duma Gideon Boko recently appointed Bogolo Joy Kenewendo as Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy. This follows a broader cabinet reshuffle to introduce fresh leadership and expertise into key ministries.

Kenewendo is a 37-year-old woman who began her political journey in April 2018 at the age of 30. She is currently the youngest minister in Botswana and excels in every portfolio assigned to her. Previously, she was the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry.

She completed a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Botswana and a Master of Science in International Economics from the University of Sussex.

Before pursuing politics, she worked as an economic consultant and served as a trade economist in the Ministry of Trade and Industry. During her occupation as Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Kenewendo focused on promoting economic diversification, attracting foreign investment, and enhancing Botswana’s competitiveness in the global market.

She launched several initiatives designed to promote entrepreneurship, empower young people, and enhance gender equality within the business sector. Additionally, she played a key role in negotiating important trade agreements as Chairperson of the Southern Africa Customs Union Council of Ministers of Trade. Kenewendo’s leadership has given her numerous accolades, including being recognised as one of Africa’s Most Influential People and earning a spot on TIME magazine’s TIME100 Next Honorees list in 2022.

She has also received awards such as the Obama Young African Leaders Initiative for Young Women and the Botswana Change Maker Award. In her new role as Minister of Minerals and Energy, Kenewendo is expected to drive initiatives that enhance Botswana’s mining industry while promoting sustainable practices.

Her appointment has received widespread congratulations, demonstrating confidence in her capacity to promote growth and sustainability within the sector.
