MANUAL FOR DEVELOPING NATURE-BASED CARBON PROJECTS IN EASTERN AFRICA

September 15, 2025

New Manual Empowers Eastern Africa to Scale High-Integrity Nature-Based Carbon Projects

Launched at ACS 2025, this manual— Developing Nature-based Carbon Projects in Eastern Africa — provides step-by-step guidance on how to design, implement, and scale high-integrity carbon projects across the region.

From forests to grasslands to agroforestry, nature-based solutions (NbS) hold vast potential in Eastern Africa to tackle climate change, protect biodiversity, and strengthen livelihoods. Yet many project developers face barriers to accessing carbon markets.

Developed by Climate Focus and the Eastern Africa Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance (EAA), under the VCMI Access Strategies Program, the manual covers:
✅ Project design and baselines
✅ Permanence, leakage & additionality
✅ Monitoring & commercialization strategies
✅ Legal and regulatory considerations

A practical resource to unlock finance and scale NbS across Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
