Giyani’s Demo Plant produces first battery-grade manganese

March 10, 2025

Giyani Metals has successfully produced its first High Purity Manganese Oxide (HPMO) at its demonstration plant in Johannesburg. Samples are set to be shipped to prospective offtake partners in March. The plant remains on track to produce High Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (HPMSM) in the first quarter of 2025, with samples to be provided to potential offtakers for qualification trials—a crucial step in the offtake process and a key component of project financing.

HPMO is a valuable precursor for certain electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) batteries. It is increasingly preferred for the rapidly growing market of Lithium-Manganese-Iron-Phosphate and Lithium-Manganese-Nickel-Oxide EV and ESS batteries.

Charles FitzRoy, President and CEO of Giyani Metals, described this achievement as a significant milestone. He noted that it confirms Giyani’s technological capability to serve the evolving battery industry and diversifies the company’s product risk. FitzRoy emphasised the importance of producing multiple battery-grade manganese products, stating, “The commercial advantages cannot be overstated. The battery market is moving quickly, and our ability to produce both HPMO and HPMSM positions us as a preferred supplier.”

Giyani has received indications of high demand for HPMO from OEM groups and plans to produce both HPMO and HPMSM to maintain pace with the rapidly developing battery market. The company aims to serve a wide range of future battery types.

A secondary objective of the project is to derisk the design of the commercial plant to be constructed in Botswana, which is being developed alongside a definitive feasibility study expected to be completed in 2025. The demonstration plant has advanced through commissioning phases, marking significant progress toward the first production of HPMSM.
