Melusi Tshabalala is an energy executive, entrepreneur and recognised industry leader with nearly two decades of experience spanning power generation, transmission, distribution and renewable energy development across Southern Africa.

As the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mesama Energy, he leads a multidisciplinary business that advises, develops and delivers energy infrastructure projects across the renewable energy value chain. His work focuses on project development, battery energy storage systems (BESS), utility-scale renewable energy, commercial and industrial (C&I) energy solutions, technical advisory, asset management and operations support.

Melusi has built a reputation for bridging the technical, commercial and strategic dimensions of the energy sector. He works closely with independent power producers (IPPs), commercial and industrial energy users, investors, development finance institutions, government stakeholders and technology providers to structure bankable energy projects that improve energy security, support decarbonisation and unlock long-term economic value.

Prior to founding Mesama Energy, Melusi held engineering and leadership positions with leading global energy and technology companies, where he gained extensive experience across generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. This foundation has enabled him to successfully navigate both the engineering complexities and commercial realities of Africa’s rapidly evolving electricity market.

He is an active contributor to the industry’s future through advisory board appointments, conference moderation and thought leadership. Melusi regularly facilitates strategic discussions on energy storage, power market reform, wheeling, renewable energy procurement, infrastructure investment and the energy transition, bringing together policymakers, utilities, financiers, developers and large energy users to accelerate practical, investment-ready solutions.

Melusi holds a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current), a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Practice and an MBA from Henley Business School. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), where his research explores leadership frameworks that enable Black Independent Power Producers to successfully navigate South Africa’s renewable energy transition.

He is passionate about building resilient energy systems, expanding private sector participation in Africa’s electricity market and developing commercially sustainable projects that advance economic growth while supporting a just and inclusive energy transition.
