Thakane Lekhera

Advisory in Municipal Finance

Thakane Lekhera obtained the degree MCom Management Accountancy from the North-West University. She completed the Municipal Financial Management Programme certificate with the University of Pretoria. She has also completed certificates in Essentials of Budget Formulation and Public Sector Risk Management with the National Treasury of South Africa. It was her hard work that earned her the position of Assistant Manager: Municipal Finance Management Unit with the Free State Provincial Treasury where she managed to assist municipalities in her district with compliance and reporting. This gained her recognition in the whole of Xhariep region and other districts. She joined the Eastern Cape Provincial Treasury at a promotional position of Deputy Director: Municipal Finance Governance.  

 

She later re-joined the Free State Provincial Treasury through a transfer. She is currently employed by the South African Local Government Association as a Senior Advisor: Revenue Enhancement in the Municipal Finance, Fiscal Policy and Economic Growth cluster. In this position, some of her responsibilities include supporting and advising municipalities on their capital and operational budgets. She also provides support and advice on the development and implementation of appropriate strategies/initiatives to enhance the revenue of these municipalities as well as representing the interests of SALGA members by lobbying for equitable fiscal allocations for local government, which cover a variety of aspects that may have an impact on the financial viability of municipalities or may impede them from delivering on their constitutional mandate
