Onke Ngcuka is an environmental journalist with the Daily Maverick’s Our Burning Planet unit. She has covered topics ranging from the effects of the climate crisis on mental health to being in Glasgow, Scotland to report on the environmental conference COP26, as well as doing on the ground reporting of the devastating KZN floods, and everything in between.
Ngcuka obtained her journalism and media studies honours degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. After graduating, she completed an internship at Reuters News Africa. The journalist has also worked with organisations such as the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the United Nations Environment Programmes where she partook in environmental fellowships.
She is the winner of the 2022 Standard Bank Sikuvile ‘Upcoming Journalist of the Year’ Award, where her story on indigenous crops was also a finalist. Her work has also been recognised by the Vodacom Journalism Awards where she was awarded two commendations for her written work on biodiversity.
