Production Manager: Publishing

The Production Manager develops work procedures and establishes quality standards for the production of the publications in collaboration with the rest of the publishing team.  Manages and organizes daily operations involved with the production of the publications and the distributed to relevant events or subscribers globally.  Coordinates publication efforts through assigning and prioritizing the work and ensures services are provided on time and is of the highest quality at the lowest possible cost; monitors supplies and schedules to ensure a smooth working environment.


  • Minimum of 3 years traffic/production experience in a publishing/agency environment.
  • Relevant tertiary education will be an advantage.
  • Must be residing in Cape Town.
  • Excellent project, organizational and time management skills.
  • Accurate attention to details & deadline orientated.
  • Strong communication skills with proven stakeholder relationship skills.
  • Ability to multi-task & manage a high volume of tasks efficiently in order to meet deadlines.
  • Responsible with the ability to use initiative.
  • Previous experience of managing direct reports.


  • Make sure that all sales contracts are loaded and accurate on company CRM system.
  • Manage publishing bookings in CRM system.
  • Check weekly sales reports.
  • Traffic all advert and editorial material from clients, with several timeous reminders, and check to ensure materials meet our specs/ requirements.
  • Work closely with Sales team to ensure that customer expectations are met​.
  • Occasionally assist with customers who need ads designed.
  • Keep track of non-commercial items from Editors for layout.
  • Manage the layout process from the time the booking is made to the time it goes to print.
  • Check customer / author corrections, as well as all proof reading edits are made correctly.
  • Send magazine to print and check print quality / adverts in prepress etc.
  • Ensure the digital copy of the magazine is published timeously & correctly.
  • Ensure digital team is aware of all digital aspects associated with any print contracts.
  • Work closely with Marketing team to ensure all media partnership requirements are met.
  • Assist with daily management of Production Coordinator/Assistant.
  • Obtain print quotes & book upcoming print jobs into production.
  • Freight bulk copies of magazines to conferences with careful attention to turnaround times, customs issues etc.
  • Manage careful stock control & magazine storeroom.
  • Assist Sales team with all booking queries.
  • Ensure Advertisers & magazine contributors are included in distribution (print & digital).
  • Load Purchase orders into PO System when required.
