Addressing nexus of food, energy, water and waste

May 02, 2025

Food, water, and energy security must be addressed as a four-part equation that includes waste—without this alignment, sustainability remains unachievable, says Ysaac Akinin, a Chemical Engineer (UCV) with experience in agro-industrial processing, food technology and sustainability.

Currently a partner/director at Jabu Technologies Africa, he will be a speaker on the session The Water-Energy-Food Nexus: Impact on water security in the commercial and industrial sector at Enlit Africa 2025.

“While efforts are made to conserve water in industrial operations, they are often offset by the overexploitation of water-intensive crops in regions where water is scarce.

“We, here, face a paradox: countries with ample water supplies often avoid high-water-consuming crops due to cost and market inefficiencies, while water-stressed nations exploit their reserves for export, effectively shipping water rather than food,” said Akinin.

According to him, Africa must base food production on two principles to secure its future. “Prioritising crops suited to local conditions and maximising nutrition per unit of water, energy and chemical inputs.”

For him policymakers and businesses must do a better job of working together.

Find out what else he has to say about the water, energy, food and waste nexus in the video.
